Yes, it's ok to make fun of yourself. Some great humor comes from nowhere else.
We cannot make everyone happy all the time. If life is restricted by fretting about hurting others feelings to the extreme we can make ourselves sick with that.
In old Time's Texas the people had a very kind manner. The rule was, if you cannot say something nice to or about someone don't say anything at all.
That worked amazingly well. Common courtesy goes a long way.
Ironically the same kind, courteous people who let a great deal slide, evaporate without a word, with others also lived by a very rigorous moral standard: violate that and you might receive worse than unkind words.
Humor was wry, gracious, directed at ribbing others and self equally without offense.
The point is this: courtesy and hospitality should not be confused with lack of limits. Never be afraid to draw a line and stand by it.
There is an inborn admiration for those who do.
Let the chips fall where they may.

I make fun of myself all the time. I'm short, heavy, and have a tendency to be flaky at times. If I don't, someone else will. So I might as well beat them to the punch.
I feel the same as you about making fun of other people. I tease, but I take great care with what I say and what topic I touch. I just can't make fun of people or bear the thought of possibly hurting someone.

If you can make fun of yourself you can use it to your advantage to bring a little humor into a bad situation or to prove a point. You can demonstrate by using yourself as the subject and not the real person and then show the humor of the situation. "I thought I could fly once. You see this crook in my nose? It went along with the cast on my left leg. Needless to say my flying needed a little more practice before take-off."

I am usually an optimistic and a happy person. ( most of the time.) and as such , often " make fun of myself" especially when doing beach activities like wind surfing or nautical ski.
I am not gifted for these activities.
As for making " fun of others " i do it only with , strange enough , people i like very much , people i respect and care a lot for and most important persons who know my sense of humour.( if i have one.)

I can always make fun of myself. It is healthy to understand your shortcomings and make lite of it. That leaves you un-vulnerable. I can steal someone thunder by making fun of it myself. Also it is a good ice breaker, or gets you out of awkward situations.

Take a look at my picture (to the left), and you tell me if I don't seem like someone who can make fun of himself. With my hair in cornrows, I have such a high forehead that it looks like ten square acres of advertising space!

I make fun of myself and of my friends all the time. It's...fun :-) Of course there are certain limits with friends, but not really with my best friends.
