Acting isn't about 'how you look'. It's about 'how you feel'. Try to listen honestly in character to the scene and take in the moment as you would in real life.
If this happened to you in your real life you wouldn't try to look sad! You would simply react. I know that is a hard distinction for an inexperienced actor at first.... Just try to be honest and 'live in that moment.' And TRY things. Your director will tell you if what you are doing is working.
It's all about honesty.

Ask yourself, what would this character say to herself upon hearing that news. Your face will naturally reflect the mental response. If you understand the subtext of the scene and you are in the moment, you will have the answer. Is she shocked at the news? Is she sorry it's her and NOT Jack? Does she sort of wish it was Jack? Did she have a feeling it probably is her? Is she afraid? Does she even trust this man who says he can interpret dreams?
Isn't acting great?!
Good luck and break a leg!

Think about the last thing you want to see before you die.
For me, if I knew I was dying, I would go somewhere pretty and try to keep my eyes open and looking at beautiful things as long as I could. I imagine being on the top of a mountain in the summer, covered in wildflowers.

The absolute BEST way to look sad on stage when you can't say anything is:
Drop your head down a bit into your chest (don't dig your chin in or anything, just droop it a bit) and then look up. Your eyebrows naturally go up since you're looking up, but with your head down, you end up looking really sad.
Good luck!
Happy acting!

You could imagine yourself experiencing something sad.
Your dad is watching you play baseball, and your team is behind by one run with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, and you strike out.
Something really really disappointing like that.

Recall a time that your were sad, and link an image to that feeling. An image that I use to bring myself to tears is the mental picture of my Grandfathers empty chair on the porch... (It's OK to be sad on stage - it won't hurt you.) Try it instead of just looking sad.
