Just had the same problem, and it took me actually a week to get the temperature I wanted because of my room temperature
You have to turn down the temperature a bit and wait for 24 hours, if it's still not where you want it, you have to do that as long as it takes but always in a period of 24 hours because that's how long it takes the water temp to adjust and the heater to work to the new setting

There also something called an aquarium chiller to bring the temperature down, but it is really pricy

Hope that helped

If you want your water temp to be 75, you don't want the heater "turning on" at 75, you want it to regulate the temperature at 75. There is usually an adjustment screw on the heater itself. Takes a while to get the temp set, since you want to make a very small adjustment and then wait several hours to see the effect. If you don't have an adjustable water heater, then I suggest a run to the aquarium store to buy one.

read the directions or the paperwork that came with your heater....it may not have that functionality....if it doesn't just turn your heater down. if you live in an area that is consistantly warmer than 80, you may want to invest in a chiller. Or tons of ice cubes.

If you have a sump filter system you could put some ice cubes in a ziplock bag and float it in your sump to lower the temp, you could do the same in your tank but you would want to be careful not to lower the temperature too fast or it could harm your fish.
another option would be to place a small fan where it could blow across the top of your tank. the fan would cause evaporation which would take away some of the heat in your tank. many saltwater fish hobbyists keep a fan blowing on their sump filters to keep temperatures down.

If its standard turn the knob at the top 1/4 of a turn this should reduce it by 4f.
