Metal roofs are the most expensive, followed by tile, and then asphalt shingles.

As the previous person pointed out, metal roofs are best for snow, because the sun causes the snow to melt and it slides right off the roof. If that's not a concern, an asphalt shingle is the most cost-effective. When we had our roof done last year on a 1700 square foot house, they said a tile roof would be an additional $5000 more than the asphalt shingle.

Tiles are also susceptible to breakage if you ever need to walk on your roof. And, when they do break, it's without warning, which could get you seriously injured or killed.

Roofers are pretty common, as far as getting someone certified to do the work. And, it's worth having someone else do it, unless it's your line of work. They know how to put on the tar paper correctly to prevent leakage, and how to put the shingles on so that they look right and repel water correctly. Avoid places like Home Depot for installation. I've heard many nightmares about them installing anything in your house.

Don't scrimp on the shingles, though. Get a good 30-year shingle at the least. The GAF Timberline series has some attractive, 30-year shingles. Your roofer should be able to provide you with brochures and samples of whatever product they recommend.

I think metal is better. For any climate. They normally come with a 40 year warranty, there are many colors to choose from, and look attractive. You don't have to worry about a shingle getting blown loose in a heavy wind storm. Can be installed over existing shingle roof very cheaply. My parents had this done to their house last year, cost them around $4000 plus about $300 in labor. (got a deal on the labor, because my husband did it in a day for free and only paid the three guys that worked with him) Their house is a 30x30 with a gabled front porch, and lean-to type back porch.

As for installation, ask at the company where you buy the metal. They probably have someone who can install it or can recommend someone. Always check references for anyone who might install your roof, because there are a lot of people out there who claim to be certified and experienced but will do a terrible job.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of barn building companies use metal sheeting for their barns, and can probably get your roofing for you as well as install it. (this is where my husband works)

Depends on where you live. I live where it snows 9 months out of the year, so metal roofs are beneficial here. You can look in your local phone book and find people who do roofing. Good luck. =)
