i went on an interview the guy told me i had the job, and when can i start. he says he has to wait for the background check to come back and it takes a couple days .i have never had a problem with the background check before as i have had 3 previous jobs in loss prevention. my question is he says i have the job, but should he be saying this, if he isnt one hundred percent sure, due to the fact he is waiting for documentation?

i know he hasnt done anything wrong, but if i dont get the job, getting someones hopes up then crushing them isnt cool

He hasn't done anything wrong. Unless you've signed a contract, it's an informal job offer. He can revoke the offer at any time, even if he approves of the results of your background check. You should be excited, though - if you know you're clean, then you probably have the job!

If it makes you feel any better, I've been told this many times and I always got the job. It's basically the green light.

He probably should have said something like, "Pending the results of the background check, you have the job." It seems to me that you could hold him to what he said whether your background check comes back okay or not. But that would only be if you had him on tape.
Seems like you are a bit insecure in the matter. Or are you just nit picking?

Here's what I think it REALLY means:

Between the time you interviewed and the time the guy said it was awaiting background check, the guy you interviewed with learned that he did not have the last word on who gets hired.

You still have a good shot, but may be in competition with someone's nephew.

How would you feel if he says "I'll make a decision after receiving the result of the background check."

It pretty much means you're the top candidate and unless you come back as a serial killer, you're hired.

There's no law that says that he should not say a thing to you. He's basically giving you a heads up that hey, the job is basically yours.
