well it is not the same as just getting a breast in enlargement as the girl on there points out it is not for the looks it is about fixing ones self
it thats years of painful mental issues in most transsexuals before they even think about transitioning as a real option
it is about self worth and the operation is part of finding that worth and to better ones self to help fit into societies cruddy little slots
i feel yes some of the operation should be at least covered after all we are talking up to / and more of $100,000 where one one person to fork out most likely to be in dept for the rest of there life
we should all take a leaf out of the British way to deal with this issue
otherwise all transsexuals will only be stuck working as prostitutes, strippers or drag queens to pay off there operation
and that can be moral degrading to people un like that of nature

Absolutely. Other medical expenses are deductible, and by every reputable medical source, SRS is medically necessary, and in fact life saving. It has significant medical benefit for trans women and men. It is also proven to work, and work well. There is no reason to single out a proven, life saving and enhancing technique based on the ignorance of some people.
As far as choice goes, I suppose you could also call trauma surgery a choice since the patient could choose to just give up and die...Keep that in mind if you ever get in a car accident.
Peoples squeamishness is not an adequate excuse for discrimination.

Being fortunate enough to live in a country with a National Health Service, which paid for most of my treatment (including surgery), I'm not sure what the situation is in countries where medical treatment depends on your ability to pay.
But I would say that if corrective treatment for other congenital conditions allows for a tax refund, then so should treatment for transsexualism.
[And "T."; if you believe transsexualism isn't a serious condition, perhaps it will surprise you to learn that almost 50% of untreated transsexual people die before their 30th birthday...]

I think there's going to be a long debate before there's an answer. I'm a transwoman and I'm not sure myself whether or not there should be a tax break. I sure don't expect to get one, even if somehow it became medically necessary, with all the creepy fundies in charge. I mean, they won't even let terminally ill people take medicinal marijuana, so what can one expect?

No, sorry, I don't think they should. They are making their own choice to do the surgery so therefore they should pay for it. I can understand that certain people feel that they were born in the wrong body, however, you still make the choice to get the reassignment surgery. Your choice, your bill. This wasn't meant to sound harsh, this is just my opinion.

Absolutely NOT! They are not dying or anything from an illness. If that want to make that change, it's their responsibility and they need to take responsibility for it. It's the same as asking if I should get a tax break on my Botox treatment. It's cosmetic and not necessary for me to live, yet I feel uncomfortable or even down right unhappy with wrinkles. That's my problem. There is nothing life threatening about confused gender people. It is not the same as treating cancer.

Hell no in my opinion. If you decide to get a sex change operation then it's on you. The government shouldn't have to pay anything for it.
It's like me buying a car and expecting the government to give me a tax break for buying something that I, as an individual, want.

They already do. Everyone gets a tax break on medical expenses if it is a certain % of your income.

No. I think in CA the government will give you a free sex change surgrery *if* you are in prison (at the tax payers expense). That is plenty. bo
