I had my second child on july 2 and she was in the hospital for the first 2 weeks b/c of breathing problems but she is now home. we had been giving her the same formula they were giving her in the hospital but she has started having realllly bad gas that hurts her. I have tried 3 different types of formulas and 4 different types of bottles/nipples as well as Mylacon drops and nothing seems to be helping. She doesnt spit up at all after her meals and she burps just fine but this gas has been getting more and more painful for her. I'm taking her to the doctor of friday but until then any suggestions?? Enfamil, Similac, Goodstart, soy and milk based.... none seem to be helping much..... if you happen to have some advice or home remedy to help ease her gas pain, PLEASE tell me b/c it breaks my heart everytime she cries from being in pain and I don't know how to help it. (I have a toddler as well but she never had gas like this...) Thanks so much for any suggestions!

she doesn't continuously scream....she starts grunting a little then just cries for a few minutes and draws her legs up to her belly and squirms around till she can get a little fart out then she's just fine... i know gas is normal but it's the amount of times she's getting the gas and how painful it is for her that has me not knowing what to do.

Does she scream loudly and sharply? Do her little legs go up and down?

Are you sure she's not colicy? It's easy to diagnose colic because the scream is like an "emergency" scream sharp. Legs going up and down is the sign for a gassy tummy.

Have you tried varying the temperatures of the formula. Maybe cold formula gives her a tummy ache?

She's not constipated, right? A tsp of Karo syrup in her formula if she doesn't go at least 1 every 3 days.

I would burp her like, after every 2 oz. of formula. She may not like that, but I don't want any air in there if I can help it. After she eats, you walk with her, bouncing her up and down gently on your shoulder.

I know how hard it is when they cry, especially when you can't stop them and you can't stop their pain. Take heart that she's not going to remember this, she won't hold it against you, and you are doing everything possible.

Do you have that set of DVDs that tells you how to listen to your child's cries so they can tell you what the child wants? So interesting. I watched this lady take a room full of screaming babies, point out how they were crying, told mom what to do and ... silence. I think they're called the Dunstan tapes. If that doesn't work googling, e-mail me. I'll find it for you. It's in one of my old e-mails.

Good luck. She's okay, really. And your family will get through this.

Take care!
Debbie

Try giving her water mixed with apple juice. A 50/50 blend will help with the gas and keep her regular. She needs the extra fluid to help process the milk. Breast milk is the best but a little water will do wonders for baby. You will be amazed at the difference it will make in the reduction of diaper rash.

I think it depends on the child... And with their small tummies, I think most all newborns have some degree of gas irritation. I would read some different gentle exercises you can do with her to help relieve her pains. I think as she gets older it will disappear. But I am only talking out of my experience. Definitely ask her doctor just to rule out anything serious.

Lay her on her back, then hold her little feet and pump them slowly up-down, up-down, arooooound. (So her knees go to her chest twice -- lifting her bum up just a little -- and then make a circle with her knees passing over her chest.) Do this several times, alternating the direction you make the circle.
It's kind of silly, but it worked every time with my son.
Holding her with her head in your hand and tummy along your arm and gently patting her back can also help a lot.

I know in this day in time this answer may be unconventional but try breastfeeding her my son is now 5 months and he hardly ever has any gas on his stomach because breast milk has natural comfort proteins , it's totally up to you.
Also your baby may be Lactose intolerant and cows milk may just cramp up her tummy. just a suggestion talk to her doc. and ask about a lactose free milk.
