Soft furnishings seem to collect smells, so go outside and shake cushions, mats and throws then leave them out to get some UV and the breeze though them. If you have carpets sprinkle with sodium bicarb and let it sit for a bit before vacuuming it up.
Open all the windows to let fresh air in.
If you can't do all this, then light some incense or fragrant candles - the flame will burn up some of those old smelly volatiles.
Whatever you do, don't use those nasty artificial sprays and plug-ins they are BAD for your health and BAD for the environment and they are expensive. If you just have to spray something, use essential oils in water from a pump spray bottle.
I like petit grain, lavendar or citus.

The very best air freshener is GOODSPHERE it is a glass bowl filled with water, then swithched on. It draws in all the odours and ellimates them. You can add oils to smell nice but the freshness is already there naturally, the two I have have coloured bases which change colour and everyone thinks they are great. I am getting another one so I will have one in each room because they work better than anything else I have used and once it is bought there is no other cost. I bought mine from the shopping channel and highly recommend them, if you have asthma they are perfect all the pollen will go and the air will be clean. good luck.

I've discovered this foam spray - 1001 I think it is - that you spray on your carpets and, within 5 mins it disappears and doesn't need hoovering afterwards. There's a flowery one, it's a little overpowering, but quite long lasting. Otherwise I tend to use spray air fresheners as I find the plug ins overpriced. I also open my windows all the time (hubby moans)

How can you freshen your home by spraying all these poisons everywhere? Yuk. Open the windows, or use some nice smelling petals or plants. I like the smell of lemon balm personally, its easy to grow and costs me nowt.

Hello, of course opening the windows, and cleaning should work the best! I have a cat and i found some type of new pellets that you put in cat litter to deodorize the cat box litter. i put nice looking containers around the house, this absourbs odors to remove them. Also i found closet deoderizers one has charcole in it . i bought them at walmart and they are made by willert. they may remove odors and allow freshness in! Dorothy
