my small bathroom is getting mold up in the ceiling, i know it could be because there is no window, but will installing a new ventilation fan help with this? i'm also dying to install a new one because it's very dark. In the past i've look at some ventilator fans but they seem too big, to install it will they need to cut around to make it bigger?

Being new isn't going to help BUT go with more CFM's. I would bet that what you have now is a 70 cfm unit, go to the next level which is a 110 unit. For your existing mildew problem get yourself a sprat bottle of Zinssers "Jomax" I guarantee the mildew will disappear before your eyes, Good luck Les the painter

A new fan wont necesarily help unless it has more CFM capacity (Cubic Feet per Minute). A bigger fan in dimension usually just require cutting some sheetrock and making sure the ducting is the same size. As far as the mold, I would follow what Les the painter said & use Zinssers "Jomax" or ask a paint store what anti - mold remedy they recommend.

I don't know where you live. But, in California, it's a code requirement to have either a bathroom window or vent fan for that very reason (plus getting rid of the poo-poo smell).

Keep in mind that you're going to have to ventilate it to the outside, which will require a roof penetration. I suppose you could just ventilate it to an attic. But, that's definitely not to code and you may end up with the mold in your attic, instead.

if you have lived in this place for a while without a mold problem it maybe because of the ventilation problem but I doubt it. I would find the source of the mold, a leaking pipe or drainage problem. go ahead and install the fan it certainally won't hurt but mold is a serious problem and I would find the source of it

Yes, everyone is right so far. You will definitely need a "larger" bath fan. Whether that it physically larger than existing all depends but the important thing is the CFM rating. Check out this website, it has an easy to install fixture with a good CFM rating and a low sone rating (nice and quiet). Hope it works out for you.
