It's prett affordable all over the valley actually. Though N. Scottsdale and P.V. are expensive. If you go out west to Surprise it's very affordable but the commute is a little longer. You can live in Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, Glendale, Suprise, Gilbert, Chandler, Goodyear all for a good price. Just depends on how far you want to commute.

I don't know what areas in the city you've checked, but I would guess it's more expensive in the suburbs than in the city. There's a lot of bad areas in Phoenix. I think it's cheapest in Glendale or Tempe - I wouldn't recommend Mesa because of high crime. And whoever suggested Carefree and Cave Creek - are you kidding??? That area is EXPENSIVE!

I wouldn't ever suggest living downtown phoenix- rents really aren't that high, but the crime is horrible. I would suggestion going to South Tempe, Old Town Scottsdale, Far East Mesa. These areas have lots of apartments and converted condos, easy access to the freeways, and close to major employers.
Avoid the west valley- it's a dump.

I agree with Tommy boy. Public transportation is almost nonexistent in the valley. We just launched our first 22 mile section of light rail in the central corridor, that runs from the north side thru downtown, east to Tempe and ends on the far West side of Mesa. So you could ride that to some of the museums in the Central avenue business district or in downtown. You can also ride to the Mill Ave area in Tempe to dine and wander. All that said, you are still much better off with a car to make your way around the valley to hit all the locations that you wish to visit. BTW, you will love the Chihuly exhibit!! We saw it over the Christmas holidays... Enjoy our city and State and remember to drink lots of water and take sun tan lotion with you as you travel.

You can go to Carefree and Cave Creek. They are right outside the phoenix area and the price of living is cheaper (right now). North Scottsdale is a beautiful area. It may be a little cheaper than Downtown. The area of Glendale is a little cheaper too. Its about 30 minutes from the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.
