The time has come to replace my current dead disposal. Everytime I go look at a store I am told a different tale about what I need. I plan to get a 1/2 horse power model but some places are telling me that is not enough. Others say it's too much power! What does a normal household need?

A 1/2 horsepower is plenty for a homeowner. The important thing is to take it easy on shoving food down it. Especially stringy things like bananas and sting beans and also heavy things like mashed potatoes or potatoe skins. Also carrot peels are tough. The high horsepower and other bells and whistles are just convenience features that you just pay extra for. Look for one with a good warranty. Some even include in home repair.

Go to Sears and get a good 1/2 hp model. The stores are just trying to sell you something that you probably don't need.

Unless you do a lot of cooking or plan on getting rid of somebody, 1/2 hp should do the trick.

With a new disposal, you'll get a factory waranty and probably an option to get an extended waranty for an extra $20.

1/2 horsepower is probably sufficient for most purposes. However, I would recommend the In-sink-erator evolution series. They are built with a lot of stainless steel parts. They are twice as expensive as the normal bottom of the line models but they carry a warranty of 5-10 years. Essentially you are getting a better product with a superior warranty. I also wouln't recommend putting any type of food scraps down your sink. Scrape your food into your garbage or compost it. Only use you disposal for things that fall down your sink by accident. Otherwide you will be calling a plumber to snake your sink.

Just replace it with the same HP as the one you have now. If you weren't happy with the way the old one worked(before it died) go up a step.

1/2hp should be big enough. That's what most houses have in them. Good luck.
