I lived in San Diego for a while. I arrived and shopped for an apartment and could find nothing affordable. So I asked coworkers where the poor people live and they said Mexico. And they weren't really kidding- lots of people do live in Tijuana and commute into San Diego every day. lol
But I found later that if you live in land- towards the east and away from the coast, then it is more affordable. You will find nowhere affordable on the coast or in the bigger cities, but in the rural eastern areas, there are affordable homes. However, I don't know what sort of job you'd get there, and you'll find nothing as affordable as Louisiana.

On a more positive note.
Most of the Beach cities are relatively crime free. High income areas usually have less in the way of violent crime.
the other answers above are correct. Almost anywhere in Ca. it is difficult to purchase a home on just one income. That being said there are a few places that are close to the beach, Not on it!, That are reasonably priced. Costa Mesa, North county San Diego, The Airport area of Long Beach all have homes that are within reason and the reach of an individual that has a good job. You may end up in a condo. But it will be within 3-5 miles of the beach and probably pretty nice. Personally, I would recommend the Costa Mesa area. This is practically Newport Beach and close to many beaches and John Wayne airport. You are still going to be spending close to $500,000 but right now it is a buyers market and you might be able to get a deal on a foreclosure. There are many out there right now. Good luck and don't let the 'nay sayers' run your life. Think Positive. Living in Southern California is a blast. You will love it.

Sorry. but anything close to a beach will be a bit pricey... I would suggest going further east in the foothills.. Like the Calaveras county area. It is very small, beautiful and lakes are everywhere. If you want to head out to the beach, you can be there in about two hours. I live about an hour and a half of SF, and houses are about 350,000 starting.

Yuba City California is about as affordable as you get and its getting more expensive. California is very expensive, cost of living is high, home prices are high. Prices right now are about is low as you can get and in areas where homes cost less there is a reason and that's no jobs. Gas is also the most expensive in the country, we have personnel income tax and sales tax and in areas where theres no industry property taxes are high, car registration is also very high. I've been here all my life and I cant afford to buy here, and can barely afford to rent.

well california isn't a very cheap place and there's really only one place that isn't very crime related and thats simi valley, its a small place but was named 'safest place in the state' or a title similar to that. its about..30-50 minutes ,depending on traffic, away from the beach.
