Could someone in the know do me a BIG favour, and go to Ebay item number 150140851667 Roof tiles. The seller says they are definately not slate, but some kind of reconstituted stuff, he doesnt know what, They are from a bungalow built in 1974, and they are 4mm thick, and they look like slate to me! or reconstituted slate anyway. What do you think? I want to bid on them, but they are a long way away, and I dont want to make a mistake.

..a reconstituted slate is a slate made from real slate which is ground down into a powder and then manufactured into a normal looking slate EXCEPT these type of slates normally have an interlocking edge and can therefore go down to a much lower pitch than a normal slate they are normally made by redland and are called CAMBRIAN slate ..they cost about £1.75 each ..expensive .. there are other products that look like slates from a distance but they are not made of slate and look very false on a roof this type is known as eternit

Steer clear they look like an asbestos cement based material to me, (approx 10% asbestos content) during the 70's the primary non natural slate material was asbestos cement.
If they are not the quality will be poor just down to natural ageing.
Main manufacturers of the period tried to make a non- asbestos based slate but due to faults they tended to crack easily and very few stand the test of time.
The ridge or hip tiles often had the maker printed on the reverse which may be visible.

it seems as they are either Portuguese or Spanish which were used a lot during that period they were cheap and nasty if you used them you would take every precaution not to look let alone tread on them as they just broke so easily if you want a good slate you can no beat welsh slates but these are a lot dearer
