it gos 31 mph but seems that it should go faster anybody out there no how fast that motor should go

Dude 31 is like 6mph faster than it should go. Feel lucky.

Boats really not go as fast as many people think they should, unless they made for speed like a 454 Jet Boat. 31 is about right. Your Prop Pitch can be changed to gain a little more speed, but, it a give take situation. More speed, less power on take off. If, it have power trim this too can be adjusted for more speed after your boat get planed off. I usually trim up for a good RPM without the Prop trying to Cavatate.

definatly wont go faster than that...how large is the boat? 85 hp really isn't a lot. and if the outboard is a 1979 it's days are numbered

31 sounds very reasonable for your boat. i have a 60 on a much lighter boat and and it only does 26. ( speed also depends on the weight you carry on board.)

The rpm around 5500 hundred.Remember the yr of the horses are a little tired so run hard won't run long.
