During the whole story, the "little girl" greets and entertains a visitor at a country house by telling him that the estate is haunted by the ghosts of some who had died. Further, she decribes how one can see sometimes the ghosts coming back from a hunt. The visitor looks out the window, sees figures coming back from wherever, and bolts. The last line of the story, which you quoted to us, is the punch line.
