If a student is the heir of a certain founder, will they automatically be placed in that house? Neville's grandmother wears a raven or some type of bird on her hat, i'm just guessing but maybe they are the heirs of Ravenclaw. If this is true, could neville be placed in Griffindor?

First of all it is a vulture not a raven. Furthermore, students are placed in the appropriate house regardless of ancestry or family affiliation. Sirius for instance is amost surely a descendant of Slytherin being from a very old wizarding family yet was placed in Gryffindor. Also the Parvati twins are in different houses, altho identical. This very question is addressed in book two when they are trying to identify Slytherin's heir.

No. Technically, since Harry Potter is part Voldemort (as explained in book 2), he should have been in Slytherin since Voldemort was related to Slytherin by blood. Harry was related to Voldemort in the sense that Voldy had impressed some of his powers and abilties on the boy, much like parents pass on traits to their children. If this idea is followed, then the sorting hat would have placed Harry in Slytherin regardless of his protestations.

Since Neville IS a Gryffindor, then if his family is descended from Ravenclaw it would appear they don't automatically have to be Ravenclaws.

A student can be placed into any house. The sorting hat takes their request into consideration just like it did for Harry, everyone has a choice.
