If cigarettes kill then those little old ladies would have been dead by now. Anyway, to answer your question, it is in these times ('80s up) that women smoking cigarettes increased. Part of their make-up; to be recognized as members of the elitist or high-society. And that habit continues. It has become addictive and to stop smoking means dying in a way, or having your favorite candy taken away from you.

George Burns lived to be 100 and he smoked cigars. Very hard habit to quit. Since they are in their 80s, what would be the point in stopping? Seize the day.

The gave up snuff, and that was a good replacement.....
If you have lived to 80.........do whatever you want to do...and I say good for you!
Believe it or not at one time it was the fashionable thing to do.
Yes it is harmful, so is crossing the street, breathing the polluted air, and just about anything we eat......but hey..if I make 80 I fully intended to do anything I am able to do...it has been a great trip.....thank you!

They started smoking at a different time when it was still considered sexy, fashionable, and cool. Magazine and radio and television advertisements glamorized smoking until the 1970's.
They really didn't know about all the harmful effects.
Once they were addicted to nicotine, it was difficult to quit.
Many just continued to smoke.

They started as little young ladies. That's why they stayed so little. And since they're still alive, they probably figure it's not worth quitting now. They have enough other hassles to deal with.

My Grandfather used to say: "God Dangit, I am 86 years old! I will do what I want! I have lived my life!"
They do it because they can. Probably the same reason any 20-30 year old does it?
