Make her read News Paper headlines like New York times etc. Most magazines now a day's are accessible on the internet. If a person wants to become political involved now it's the best time ever. I read several different News papers. I also speak three different languages. So I have the comparison of the German magazines, and what other's are reporting on this subject. Someone must have an open mind to form their own opinion. Great job for him/her to ask about it! Forster it will you!

Basically 9/11 happened and it was a horrible day for America. Bush responded that he would address those responsible. The responsible parties are several citizens of countries in the Middle East and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
We went to war with Afghanistan and named Iraq as one of the countries in the Axis of Evil which are countries that support terrorism. After winning the war in Afghanistan (but not finding Bin Laden) Bush decided the next country to attack would be Iraq. The problem is that Iraq was actually not involved in 9/11 at all. The other problem is that Bush blamed the reason we were going to war was that Iraq had WMDs, which they probably did but we never found. The UN told us not to go in there, and many other countries didn't fully support the invasion but allowed it.
Well, by us going into there we have destroyed their stable government (run by a horrible man Sadam Hussein) but also caused many of their citizens to turn to terrorism. Also, there is now a civil war there since there is no government.
At this point, the real reason people debate is that we have lost over 3500 soldiers there and there have been over 100,000 Iraqis die and more die everyday. We spent over a half a trillion dollars on the War. On top of this, no one can give a good reason why we are still there. Democrats tend to think we have done all we can so bring the troops home. Republicans think that us fighting the terrorists there is keeping us safe here.
OPINION STARTS HERE. Both sides are smoking crack. There is no reason for us to have gone in there but we need to finish creating their government and military. We are no safer here as there has been only 1 Muslim attacks on the US from 1900 - 2000. In 2001, we had 9/11. Since we invaded Iraq, there have been 4 or so attempts. Which means that it has been more attemped attacks /year since we started the war, not fewer. AND Al Qaeda is getting stronger than ever while we are losing all these Iraqi, American, and Afghani lives while spending all of the American tax payer's money.

It's a very controversial subject. Our President responded to 9-11 by attacking Iraq. They had nothing to do with 9-11. Once most figured that out, we were told that Iraq was an imminent threat with WMD's. Then we figured out that Iraq had no WMD's and that they had no army, no navy, no air force, and the only missile they had went only about 800 miles. Again, no threat to the U.S. I think finally Bush may have settle on Saddam being a bad man and Iraq needed a regime change. Bush also tried to link the war in Iraq to the war on terror. There is no link. So you see it is a very controversial subject. One in which we find the highest authority in the U.S. lying to the citizens of the U.S. and to the world.
Have your cousin get educated. Read, read, and read. Above all, do not listen to talk radio shows. There is no truth there. Have your cousin listen to all news programs, not just one. Get information from every where.

Well, let's see. We were attacked on 9/11 by a group of people, who were Muslim extremists, most of them Saudi Arabians. They were led and inspired by Osama Bin Laden, who was rumored to be hidden in Afghanistan, so we went to war there. Then, the president decided that we needed to go to war in Iraq, because they had weapons of mass destruction, at least that's what he claimed, and then we found out there weren't any, so they've been changing their story ever since then on why we went into Iraq, but the real reason is that Iraq is sitting on top of a vast oil fields and the current administration and their cronies would like to profit from that oil! Whew! Are you with me so far? So basically, most Americans ( and this is evident in the current polls) feel that the President and his administration LIED to to get us into an illegal war. That's the basics...

The facts: Iraq has been in a civil war for 500 yrs. Americas interest is purely economical. Saddam Husein has been an ally and an enemy. Bush Sr. gave up on him during his presidency. 9/11 and lies gave W. Bush an opportunity to invade and get our troops killed for no other reason than to full fill his own agenda.

Saddam, evil though he was, kept Iraqis in line...he was at one time a friend of the U.S....that changed when he invaded Kuwait...then you had the first gulf war where bush 1.0 decided (wisely) no to occupy the country...bush 1.0 & clinton kept saddam in check with the no fly zone and a good bombing when necessary...W used the fear and confusion following 911 as an excuse to invade (pick a reason) without taking into account that it might be a long, expensive and painful occupation...who knows where or how it will all end

Well as you probably already know the war was because of "weapons of mass destruction" or atleast that was the excuse but then we hear that Saddam wasn't allowing the U.N. inspectors in and maybe it has something to do with Iran at this point I'm not really sure to many excuses either way we are there and need to finish what we started thats my opinion and I know thats not what you wanted

iraq has one of the largest oil reserves in the world. Using the Sept 11th attacks as a justification, despite massive evidence that there was no connection between those attacks and iraq, the US decided to invade iraq to grab control of the oil. Native resistance to the american invasion has lead the US to create torture camps, and american soldiers have systematically slaughtered, raped and abused approximately 10,000 iraqis per month since the start of the war.

"This isn't meant to be controversial and I'm not asking opinions..."
the problem is, Iraq IS controversial and America is divided on the issue, so the only thing you will get on Y/A is opinions, unless you are open to the truth.
The TRUTH is that Iraq is a war for profit and the only winners are as follows:
Caci
Parsons
Blackwater
Dynacorp
Titan
Halliburton
KBR
Exxon

Good luck getting a neutral answer on here. Most people don't realize that 90% of the country is peacfull and the other side doesn't realize that the other 10% never will be.
