What's in a name?

Question

Why do people name their kids first name, middle name, last name and then call the kid by their middle name?

Is this a regional thing that they do in certain parts of the country?

Do they do it to distinguish Bob Senior from Bob Junior?

Did they have to name the kid something horrid after a relative and then decided to go with the middle name?

What is the point of not giving the kid what it is gonna be called it's first name ?

ex. There could be more than one Bob Doe,Bob Doe and Bob Doe but with middle names Bob timothy Doe,Bob Willam Doe and Bob Patrick Doe . It's to tell people apart.

For my family, it is just a matter of independence. My husband is David the III and my son, the IV. So it goes in our family that GGdad is called David, Dad is called Dave, Husband is called Davey, and Son is called Jim (or Jimbo affectionately).

(David James IV) has a family name, but independence from the hum-drum dave, davey, david, dj.

I know families that have done this to carry on a family tradition even though they don't really like the name.

We call our kids by their first names or we shorten it
Roland - Ro
Kristen- Kris
Cameron (girl)- Cam-Cam (she just turned 5 yesterday)

when parents r mad they say their middle name to show their mood in their wordds
