Most likely this would help Republicans, but it's not certain. If he were to jump ship from the Dems, it's unclear how many Dems would vote for him in a general election. My guess is not very many. However, in a country that's fairly evenly divided (despite opinions on Bush being fairly one-sided), those few voters might cost a Dem the election. Nader may or may not have done this to Gore in Florida in 2000. He likely did: if 1% of Nader's voters in Florida had voted for Gore, he would have won.
Most likely it would hurt the Dems. Wouldn't hurt much, but it could be enough to cost Dems the election.

If Obama ran as a third party candidate the Republican candidate would win because the registered Democrat voters who vote for Obama would take votes away from the Democratic candidate.

Yep as everyone has said, he would split the democratic vote and the GOP would be elected. Look at what happened to Bush in 1992 with Perot.
