Laws vary by state and country.

Most states require you to be licensed before providing any type of mental health services, though most also make an exception for clergy.

So, you could not call yourself a "licensed marriage/family counselor" or "licensed family therapist" without having a license.

But some states allow for non-licensed practice. For example, New Hampshire has a "registered mental health provider" category, which would allow you to do marriage and family counseling, but only under that title -- you could not say you were licensed.

I checked the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation and they list Marriage/Family Counseling as a category. Therefore, I assume that it is required by the state to be licensed.

License requirements vary by state. I'm not sure that every state requires a license.
