What do hairy worms eat?

I found a big hairy worm in my backyard, and i don't knoow what it eats besides grass. Because if i keep grass in the cage, the grass will die, and began to stink.

Is it a caterpillar ? or a worm. I have never seen a hairy worm. If it is a caterpillar then I would give it leaves off of a tree, and sprinkle some water in the jar occasionally.

They are Caterpillars, they grow to be butterflies and moths and they eat plant material
