It probably started off with a bunch of these questionsthat just popped out of their head...then they try to find answers to it. They probably looked at the things around them: nature, people, etc. Who knows, the answer might be right in front of you. Then they do many many experiements, trial and error, tests, and all to prove their theory right. I guess it's all about:
1) Question
2) Experimenting/Trying/Searching
3) Discovery
4) Theory
and there we go =)

Well, people figured out maths things, like fractions and their decimal equivalents or vica versa, during moments of insight that occurred while they were eating pi. Actually I hav sero idea how they did it.

My best guess is they thought about things, experimented then created hypothesis and proofs for their questions, based on their empirical data.

Pi (the number, pie is the food) can be calculated from many different ways, and is related to circles. A quick google search in Pi will tell you more information than you'd ever like to know. You can make fractions into decimals yourself - just do long division. It's hard to draw that here, otherwise id give an example. It's really just about careful thought and logical progression.
