Well, since you're going, it doesn't matter much does it? So, don't stress too much about it. :)

Taranto summed it up well. Kids do interact with each other more (versus a commuter school like UCI) b/c they're so isolated. Really great for meeting new friends and school spirit. School also does a great job helping kids find internships. Academic rep is pretty good. Has most major sports and (again cuz there's nowhere to go) the intramural program is really big and impressive. Tons of sports for your to play.

Nearest big town is Sacramento which is about 20 min away. There's an Ikea in West Sac so cheap furniture can be found there or on Craigslist. Housing is cheap, but book fast b/c EVERYONE has to live there so the vacancy rate is almost 0.

If you like shopping, the downtown Sac mall is ok, but I'd suggest traveling the 45 minutes NE and head to the Roseville Galleria. Tahoe is only about 2 hours away. Same with SF.

The only real negative, other than the isolation, is the weather. The weather SUCKS for California. Most of the other UCs are near beaches so they typically get very moderate temps year round. UCLA, UCSD, and UCI are like 70 year round. Davis hits 110+ in the summer and below 30 in the winter. There's about 2 weeks of nice weather in the spring and fall. Allergies can really get to you because of all the plant life and animals.

The negatives:

It is in the middle of nowhere

The positives:

It is a great school
Being isolated, you will concentrate on academics
Being isolated, you will become close ot other students
While in the middle of nowhere -- it isn't that far from Napa, SF or the Mountains.
