First you need to translate those feet into inches. So you have a rectangle of 88in x 36in.

Now just think about how many times 3in can fit on each side.

88/3 = 29.333 (so just 29 since the 30th won't fit)
36/3 = 12

So you can have 29 rows and 12 columns of little squares.
Your answer is 29*12 = 348

There seems to be a difference of opinion here chiefly between 348 and 352. If I understand your question correctly, the answer would be 348.

Those who have done the '(88 x 36)/9' method have calculated the number of 9 square inch pieces that can be made from this piece of paper irrespective of their shape. However, I suppose you could argue that you could cut off the last strip of 1 inch by 36 inches. This could then be cut into 3 inch strips and made into four 3 x 3 squares making 352 in total.

7 feet 4 inches = 88 inches
88/3 = 29.333333
3 feet = 36 inches
36/3 = 12

So, you can divide this into 29 x 12 squares or 348 squares.

Let x = no. of rectangular pieces that can be cut.

Length in inches = (7 * 12) + 4 or 88
Width in inches = 3 * 12 or 36

(88 * 36) / (3 * 3)
3168 / 9
352 pieces can be cut

7 ft 4 in = 12*7 +4 = 88 in
3ft = 3*12= 36 in
Area of board= 88*36 = 3168 square inches
Area of piece= 3x3 = 9 in^2
3168 / 9 = 352 smaller individual pieces can be made from the original.

If its a trick question no "different" 3 inch by 3 inch squares can be cut...They will all be the same 3 by 3...

You have a rectangle of 88 in * 36 in.

Number of possible different 3 inch by 3 inch squares is

(88 - 3) * (36 -3) = 2805
