Hello Canadians :)
I currently live in Brazil and I am a math professor teaching Linear Algebra and I also can teach chemistry. I speak many languages including French so that may be a benefit to teach in Canada. My salary is very low here. I get only about $1000 every month and as a Professor I believe I need more than that.
I was wondering what the average salary is there in Canada for Professors teaching in Universities or Highschools.
I'd also like to move to Canada to teach but how am I to go about this? Would I need a visa?.. That would cost I'm assuming around $3000 but can I get a loan?
I just would really appreciate if someone were to suggest the first step I should take in wanting to work in Canada as a Professor... I don't have knowledge on how to do this.
Please any suggestions? Thank You!

I don't know the immigration rules but I would suggest starting by visting the Canadian government website. Try googling 'Immigration Canada' that should get you started.

Some High School teachers make $65-$75K per year but thats a bit high for starting wages. I'm an ESL teacher and I make considerably less than that but I make enough for my needs.

University professors will make more than that but make sure that your credentials are accepted by Canadian universities - not always the case. Check with a few of the larger universities - they all have websites. If you don't know the names you can search for a list of universities.

Canadian Universities are pretty consistent in their acceptance (or frequently non-acceptance) of foreign degrees.

Education is provincially regulated so if you want to work in the public system you will need to find out what each particular province requires. Here in BC you need a BC teacher's certificate to teach in a public school and they are very specific and very picky about their requirements.

If you wanted to work in the ESL world (or French as a second language), you could get a job in a snap which would pay more than you are getting now but less than a public school teacher.

Even for an ESL job you might need a teaching certificate but you can get an ESL teaching certificate in about a month. (a public school teaching certificate can take up to two years at University - expensive) However the ESL industry is unregulated at present (though that is changing as we speak) and some companies will hire you on the spot without one. (looking at your qualifications I think that you would be a good candidate)

Vancouver is a world center for ESL teaching and there are about 200 private language schools all looking for good teachers. There are also ESL schools in every big city. Toronto and Montreal are also places where you could get your foot in the door of teaching before you consolidate your credentials.

Good luck and feel free to e-mail me if you want more info.

The average salary in Quebec(french speaking canada) is $42,000. Which is considerably more than the 12,000 you make a year. As a University Professor you will be making over 42,000 but as a regular teacher, that's the average.

Today, permanent residence—and the universal health care and clean air that come with it—is a little harder to obtain. Immigrants must obtain a visa from the Canadian Visa Office and fill out an application for permanent residence from the Consulate General of Canada. Applications take an average of 25 months to process. Bush dodgers arriving in Canada must also provide a valid passport, two copies of a detailed list of all personal items brought into the country and two copies of a list of all items on the way, and proof of enough funds to cover expenses for the first six months. For more information, visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada Web site. (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp )
