First of all a big thumbs down to all of those who are abusive to you for asking the question. It is a fair question in the context of a world drowning in pollution.
Secondly even though I don't use cars myself and I do think that we need to break the spell of the car marketing machine that brainwashes people into thinking that cars are necessary, I wouldn't advocate a total ban. Environmental issues are not about all or none. (even breathing pollutes a little bit and thats OK)
My solution would start with banning cars from the central business districts and replacing the roads with bike lanes and mass transit. I would then ration gasoline as a controlled substance so that those that we could rein in the unbridled use of such a dirty technology. Those that use none could sell their rations to those that think it necessary while we slowly wean ourselves off our dependancy by slowly decreasing the amount rationed.
The eventual goal would be to cut off all gasoline (or even better but still polluting fuels) except farmers to to produce food efficiently, trucks to bring it to the cities and emergency vehicles. In those cases a little pollution is worth it.
People will be surprised just how much we DON'T need to burn gasoline. Even though I very occassionally use a car or a taxi, for the last seven years, I have used a bike for daily commuting, shopping, visiting and even travelling and moving and I have more money, better health, I can eat as much as I like and stay fit and whats more is that I actually enjoy it a lot more - not to mention that everyone breathes just a little easier.
I'm not trying to act high and mighty or pretend that I'm so perfect (I'm not) - I just want others to know that cars are not only NOT necessary but they are a ball and chain tied to people's ankles - a mini prison, economically, physically (are you really 'free' sitting in traffic) and environmentally - and despite people's attachment, they are in the end a source of misery on so many levels.
