It really shouldn't, but I have known people who can make things worse with their "apologies". Usually, its not sincere and more of excuse making than apologizing.

The thing about apologizing is that you are admitting to doing something wrong. More importantly, if you apologize in an insincere manner the apology will most definitely make things worse. I am sure this happens a lot....

Depends on the person making the apology. Those with too much pride & ego just don't know how to apologize without adding their however.....to the apology. Would be best to just not say anything at all.

I have found that even though I meant the apology, it made things worse because the person just didn't care to hear it.
It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

When a waiter apologizes for dripping sweat into my soup, I find that that actually makes things worse.

It isn't the apology so much as the explanation that often follows. Keep it simple stupid.

I found out the hard way, just once. That is all it took for me to get out of the car and walk away. Somethings just can't be saved, some people just don't get it.
