All valid answers so far; and with all due respect; I'm curious as to doing a paper by using a Poll to create it. In essence the term aptly describes the WHAT. The WHY might be a bit more complicated in the "What" in someone with little or no knowledge. The effort however isn't at all demeaning, even if one had to call in a FIX after the fact.
The basic principal is ancient. One might gain some levels of knowledge through reading; but the practical application of doing anything ones self allows that, even through trial and error we might gain experience. There were times throughout history when man HAD TO DO; as there may not have been someone else able; convenient; or affordable.
Einstein related quite susinctly a theory. I'll paraphrase..."If one focuses on the study of one thing, even for 15 minutes a day; one can become an "expert" at that one thing."
Beyond that... DIY might offer me the opportunity to NOT pay a Plumber $60 per hour; and allows my ego, and sense of self worth, some neccesary nourishment. (No offense to Plumbers, BTW)

If you are referring to DIY on TV, I don't know, but there are hundreds of websites that have DIY step by step instructions for almost anything around the house. I don't have DIY myself, but I do have HGTV and their programs are aimed towards just about anyone. Some programs are aimed at the person who wants to know how to do things themselves and other programs are aimed at people who want to find someone to do it for them. There is mostly a balance so that everyone can enjoy something on it. I work at Home Depot and I watch it so I can help my customers figure out how to get something done that I didn't know how to do. Home Depot and Lowes and Better Homes and Gardens, lots of websites offer better step by step directions if that is what you are looking for. A lot of the TV shows are mostly for entertainment and not a whole lot of how to do it.

DIY offers a low or no cost resolve to a specific problem or project that allows the non professional the ability to complete a job that normally would be out of their field of expertise and at the same time save them some of their hard earned money. Hope that is what you were searching for.

As the name implies, DIY is for people who do not want to pay to have services done. DIY offers self-satisfaction and cost savings.
