I have heard a lot of different answers for this. Some Muslim women say that they feel liberated by the hijab because they are not being judged based on their facial appearance. Therefore, that pressure is off them. Others say that the hijab is oppressive because it is a symbol of male dominance and because in places like North America, they feel others judge them negatively for wearing it. Irshad Manji has written extensively on the topic. She's really interesting to listen to because she's a young, accomplished, Muslim-Canadian feminist who makes articulate, educated points that relate to women's--especially Muslim women's--issues in contemporary society.

Well, actually Islam requires the women to hide their 'aurat' which are parts of a woman's body. Let me give you an example, a Muslim woman must not show their neck and below (that includes the chest and the bosom until the ends of her toes) and her hair (which most Malaysian Muslim adhere to by wearing scarves or 'tudung'). As 'hijab' actually hides the face altogether, it is a somewhat safer (in the sense that she won't have to worry about accidentally exposing any skin). But in a country like Malaysia, or any other tropical country for that matter, it is not practical to wear it (although there are women wearing them) as it is very hot and humid, and could cause extreme discomfort and impairing the eyesight of the wearer. After all, doesn't Islam promote a moderate way of life? We do what we can, not only focusing on one thing and ignoring the rest. To me, the way you wear clothes is not the real indicator of your faith. It won't work if the only Islamic thing about you is your clothes, whereas your behavior left much to be desired. That said, about the Islamic nation, Malaysia is an Islamic nation as written in the law, but as shown by the various answers for this question, the opinion varies among people.. But I truly agree that Malaysia has a high toleration in religious beliefs. =)

im a muslim, and don't wear a hijab regularly but am contemplating it now. its not opresion, its just a very good method of not attracting men when u go out becuase of how u look. i live in europe and mostly attract a lot of male attention, but whenever i do have my head covered, i don't attract half that attention

I suppose that would depend on how your were brainwashed as a child. Either someone told you that it was really freedom to bear the hijab, or someone didn't have to tell you anything and you lived in the open and made up your own mind.

Americans consider this oppression. I have read why it isn't and I don't agree. But I am not Muslim.

Women don't have equal rights under muslim laws. If you don't wear it properly you can be beaten by any man, 'any'. If you don't wear it, you can be killed.
