That's a tough one and all the yummy drinks at Starbucks can share part of the blame. I see a lot of teenagers drinking coffee and while it is pretty common, it still seems a little odd to me.

Honestly, I'd say 17 or 18--and think about it first. I started drinking coffee in college, and while I really do love the taste, I kinda wish I hadn't. I'm quite addicted to it and get a terrible headache if I don't have it. I don't even drink that much coffee: 1-2 cups in the morning and 1 in the afternoon.

About 14 - basically around the time one starts to make one's own decisions about when to go to sleep at night. It's also around the same time a person's tastes mature enough that s/he enjoys coffee.

Note that most people don't have a problem with giving caffeine-containing soda pop to prepubescent children ... so the idea that coffee is an 'adult' beverage because of the 'addictive' caffeine it contains is just a fearful bias. I think if a child enjoys coffee, or wine for that matter, it's not inappropriate to drink it in moderation. I wouldn't say it'd be appropriate to drink coffee habitually, though, until one is responsible for one's own sleep habits, because coffee affects that.

Some people say if you start drinking coffee when you're too young it can stunt your growth, but the tallest man I've ever met drank coffee all his life, his mother even gave it to him from a bottle when he was a baby....so, I'm not sure that theory is correct. But, as someone who was a baby sitter for 7 years, why would any parent give their child coffee (at least any significant amount) and get them more hyper than kids usually already are? Doesn't make sense to me.

I would say around 6 or 7. I am not saying to go buy the kid a tall espresso. Coffee with milk for children is acceptable in some countries or cultures. As long as it is not overdone and it is consumed in moderation with a balanced diet.

I think it depends on the person. I figure teens drink a lot of other things with caffeine, so why would coffee be different?? I let my 13 year old drink coffee occasionally. (a day or two a week)

Depends on family and culture. My family started literally at birth (we've Puerto Rican), and since 'cafe con leche' is pretty much milk with a bit of coffee, my parents opined that it had some nutritional value, opposite soda, which has more caffeine and sugar.
