Try to come up with something interesting to put in the story. Perhaps a clever twist that no one would ever expect. I love a good plot twist or four thrown into the mix. I've had the same problem myself in the past. If there's absolutely nothing more you feel you could do with the original idea you had, then perhaps merge it with another idea, or change it up in some way. Place an obstacle in your character's path and then as you write work out the character's solution to the problem. There are so many different things you can do to a story. Remember, as Dean Koontz put it, the human imagination is the most elastic thing in the universe. Good luck and happy writings!

You don't
A story chooses you. You will know when the right one comes along because the writing of it will be an addiction until you finish.
Your best bet is to store then for some time and rock on. Write loads of short stories.
I run a writer's mentor group that writes new short stories and poems prompted by a monthly image. Check it out at the link below and if you like what you see, join the Yahoo group on the links page and shake up your muse:

I know what you mean. I wished I had kept the poetry that I wrote a few years back. Than we did not have the capacities of computer and hard drives to store em on. Nevertheless, the best way to go about is, just sit down. Go through them, have a nice cup of tea or hot java. And go for what feels right to you right now. That's usually how I go about when writing about stuff. Last year before Christmas my house caught fire. And I was in a very sad and somber mood. Living in a small hotel for three month cause we needed to completly remodel the house. I had a heart wreaking decission as whether or not to adopt my Puddel out. I decided on keeping him. Cause he is the best thing that ever happen to me. But the story I wrote for him brought me tears in my eyes. What a frustration that was. So yea, just find the moment and go back to write or re write them. Good luck!

For me, it's not that I think of the stories its more the stories come to me. I'll write a little and brood on them, until I decide whether It's good enough to actually write. Maybe that's you're problem. I know I went through dozens of story ideas before finally settling on this one.
Just keep comin up with new ideas. Best of luck to ya!

I definitely know what you mean.
Sometimes you have to let go. Read all of them again, and get rid of the ones that are hopeless. Try to continue writing some of them. Sometimes you just have to wait for the perfect idea.
