OMG!? you don't know who Sigmund Freud was?! Okay, calming down now... this is who he was:

He was a Jewish-Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist who co-founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology.
He was born May 6, 1856 and died September 23, 1939.
He was best known for his theories of the unconscious mind, especially involving the mechanism of repression.
As well as his understanding of transference in the therapeutic relationship and the presumed value of dreams as sources of insight into unconscious desires.

He is commonly referred to as "the father of psychoanalysis" and his work has been highly influential — popularizing such notions as the unconscious, defense mechanisms, Freudian slips and dream symbolism.
Also making a long-lasting impact on fields as diverse as literature, film, Marxist and feminist theories, literary criticism, philosophy, and psychology. However, his theories remain controversial and widely disputed by numerous critics, among them one who called him the "creator of a complex pseudo-science which should be recognized as one of the great follies of Western civilisation".

Carl Gustav Jung was his student.

Sigmund Freud? The "Father of Modern Psychiatry? That Freud? I would say that the greatest thing about Freud is that he is held up to be the greatest mistake maker in all of history! He tried to interpret dreams and peoples goals, desires, etc., then projected them as being psychiatric truths for all humans. No one has made greater mistakes with greater impacts on how human behaviour is interpreted than Freud. People have been incarcerated and sent to the looney bin because they fitted his profiles.

Sir Sigmund Freud (1856-1936) was a medical doctor from Vienna, Austria, who specialized in neurology. His psycho-dynamic approach to personality developed as a result of his work with adult patients who had psychiatric and emotional problems. Hi was Jewish and had a daughter Anna Freud, which in fact she is also well known. He was one the GREATEST psychologists, the father of PSYCHOANALYSIS and NO ONE can compare to him.
Freud's theory emphasized three main points:
1) Childhood experiences determine adult personality.
2) Unconscious mental processes influence everyday behavior.
3) Conflict causes most human behavior.
According to Freud, each adult personality consists of an ID, EGO, and SUPEREGO.

He had a profound effect on the intelligentsia of his time, after they discovered him, and on the arts. It is as if people suddenly discovered the psychological component of life, which had been there all along, through his writings and practice. He made them aware of psychology. It was heady and titillating stuff, Freud in his time.

Much that he staked his life and career on has been junked and revised by others. He was a pioneer for what came after him, not a be-all end-all answer man for the ages. Ideas continue to evolve.

Are you "really" asking who Freud is? If so, do your own research.

Once you understand WHO he is, you also will understand why he is considered "great" in his field. Although some of his theories may not be totally correct (modern "experts" cannot seem to agree), he provided major advances to the field of psychiatry.

His greatest contribution is more cultural, than scientific. However, he did popularize the idea of the unconscious, which remains, at least on the popular level, a useful reference for explaining the inner logic of human desire.
