Well, Harry and Dumbledore go into the cave because Dumbledore thought there was a Horcrux in the cave. In the cave there was a lake of dead bodies that would attack you if you went in the water and triend to grab the Horcrux. Dumbledore and Harry found a way to get the Horcrux out of the lake by using the traces of Voldomort when he originally placed the spell. To be able to get the Horcrux out of the bucket in which it was contained, Dumbledore had to drink this horrible potion that caused him to beg Harry for death, but Harry helped him and he finished the potion. And that's how they got the Horcrux.... or so they thought. It turned out that that wasn't the real Horcrux, that someone with the initials of R.A.B had already destroyed it, but died in the process... who that is, well, you can make your own guesses...

In that chapter Dumbledore has taken Harry to a cave where Dumbledore suspects Lord Voldemort has hidden one his horcruxes.
The horcrux turns out to be located within a stone pedestal that is filled with liquid on a small outcropping in the center of an underground lake that is populated with Inferni (animated corpses).
The liquid within the pedestal is a potion that shields the horocrux from being removed. It will only allow a cup to be dipped into it to be drank. The only way to get the horcrux is to drink the potion, which turns out to do bad things to the drinker.

Ok, Dumbledore has located where one of Voldemort's horcruxes is supposed to be. So their going to the cave to retrieve the "horcrux". Dumbledore had promised Harry that he'd take him along if he managed to find one, and it seems to be a good thing too cause it turns out the "horcrux" is protected by what looks an unedning poison or something similar. In order to get it, you have to drink your way down to it, which means that as it's going to sap your will to want to drink it you need someone there to force feed it to you/
Now note I put horcrux singular in quotes while horcux plural (horcruxes) was not put in quotes. That's because the cave is where Dumbledore believes on of Voldemort's horcruxes resides. However, the "horcrux" isn't even a horcrux. It's a fake as R.A.B. took the real one at some point in the past. It seems likely he took it before Voldemort tried to protect his horcux in this manner.

Harry and Dumbledore are trying to obtain Voldemort's horcrux ( a part of his soul). Voldemort puts many obstacles in the way, including drawing your own blood and drinking a potion that causes you pain. We don't know what Dumbledore saw during this but it will hopefully be revealed during the 7th book.

They go to the cave thing. Dumbledore drinks that potion and it makes him scared because it hurts and when it's over, they take the locket, but it's a fake (hooray for R.A.B.!!!!!!). There was anote saying that he was going to destroy it... so naturally, it's destroyed, but we don't really know if it is. Then Snape kills Dumbledore...*tear*
