As I understand it, the hope was that by using mostly Saudi nationals as hijackers, the attacks would drive a wedge between America and it's oil-rich nominal ally, forcing America to abandon it's military bases in that country (which also hosts the sacred cities of Meca and Medina), and diminishing it's influence in the Middle East in preparation for the formation of a united Muslim Caliphate.

Coincidentally, the US closed all it's bases in Saudi Arabia in summer 2003 - not long after it acquired new bases in Iraq through the simple expedient of invading that country.

Hugo Chavez has nothing to do with Al Qaeda, he's just another south american commie despot.

I think Al Qaeda may have overestimated the US response to the attacks. They may have been preparing for WWIII, nuclear warfare, who knows? I think Bin Laden would be pleased with how things are going now. The US has become one of the most hated nations in the world. The American people are severely divided. Perhaps this was all part of the plan.

All the take about AL-Qaeida getting ready to hit the US is so much BS. this is Bush"s way of getting the people to think about some thing else other than what he has done to his own country for 8 years.I for one will not full for this old song and dance again.
