While the echidna is native to Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand, the Platypus is found solely in Eastern Australia including Tasmania. BTW the correct scientific plural of platypus is either platypuses or platypus - not platypi!

if you're asking whether or not you can find a platypus alive in the wild, then yes you can. It is not an extinct animal, although it is a very odd-looking animal. There was recently a documentary made about the platypus, produced by the folks at National Geographic.

If you used a platypus as a mean of fighting for weeks, by now the poor beast would be dead.
But other platypus are alive and well in Australia.

There are platypuses in the river at the bottom of my garden. They are common in the rivers and creeks of eastern Australia. They are, however, shy and most people don't see them.
