Moderation in defense of the Constitution is no virtue.
The Constitution of the United States of America is the legal, binding document which gives limited, repeat LIMITED, enumerated powers to the federal government. Fight wars, regulate trade, enter into treaties, etc. and to impose taxes to pay for those functions. And this was firmly affixed by the 10th Amendment, which said that any power not enumerated in the Constitution to the federal government belonged to the states or to the people.
In the years since then, and especially in the years since the 16th and 17th Amendments, the federal government has been a runaway train, taking powers the Constitution never gave them, and imposing more and more restrictions upon our freedoms and rights, mostly in the name of "for our own good".
I do not believe in being moderate towards defending the freedoms, liberties and rights that are my birthright per the Constitution. I hold fast to the tenets of the Constitution, and will not consider extremism in the defense of liberty to be a vice.

I don't think you're describing a moderate. A moderate is a person who moderates his views. A moderate doesn't have extreme views or opinions on anything. You're saying that people should be so party-focused and realize that there are good ideas in both camps. If that's the case, I agree with you. I'm pro-life, anti-taxation, pro-drug legalization, pro-prostitution legalization, pro-gay marriage, and anti-minimum wage. I combine a lot of views from both sides of the aisle, but in no way am I a moderate.

Amen man. I was a political science major in college. I've always viewed myself as liberal and I am a registered democrat. The more I learn about politics, I realize, things are changing in our culture. The party lines on issues are shifting. I don't think it makes sense to be 100% on either side. You'd have to be compromising on at least one issue of you supported one side or another all of the time. Which makes me feel like people who claim to be 100% one way or the other are just head-nodders with little understanding of the issues and concepts that they claim to support.
Thanks for bringing this up. Good luck!

Yes they should.
The country has returned to its traditional polarization since "Reagan defeated the Commies" and ended the cold war.
Bush destroyed the last vestages of moderation in both parties.
Whoever comes next will have to find common ground on both sides and work very hard to break the gridlock.
For a really good insight try the current issue of Foreign Affairs magazine (not foreign policy)

Boy...wouldn't THAT be ideal. Can you imagine if people set aside their own adgendas for the common good? If people actually sat down and listened to each other without feeling insecure and threatened? Without feeling so self-important that no one elses opinions or idea mattered? What a great world.

That sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately, people are stubborn and see their way as being the best way.

Some concepts advocated by each are simply not acceptable, even in compromise.
