Actually I would have to say that many of the ideas which the Founding Fathers espoused would have been considered liberal in their day. Therefore I guess they might have been liberals using this as a benchmark. However, what I find amusing is that the hardcore left of today wants to compare themselves to these great men, when there are no discernible points beyond a desire to protest which I can see. You show me a liberal today who believes in a smaller federal government, more powerful states, less taxation, the right to keep and bear arms and self reliance. Good luck because they just don't exist and if any modern liberals class themselves this way then they are not truly liberal in the modern definition.

Because the founding fathers were considered "liberators" and where fighting against the Conservative, over the top views of the King of England. But, in truth, when you read the declaration, it comes off sounding more conservative than liberal. That is due to two things, one being slavery and the other being the puritan attitude of most of the northeast states. Jefferson knew he had to find a balance. He tried, but they still changed it.

The liberals of the Founding Fathers Day were what is commonly referred to as Classical LIberals. Classical liberals bare absolutely no resemblance to that of what passes for liberalism these days. Classical liberal are more like conservatives or moderates of todays era.

Great question

I saw this lunacy the other day.

This is what's wrong with our educational system. Semantics and definitions are being lost.

Liberalism was born in Europe and America in the 18th century. It doesn't resemble modern day Liberalism at all. Not even close.

Sometimes all you can do is shake your head in disbelief.

There is no comparison. The Liberals of our founding fathers times are the Libertarians of today.

You should check your history before you start laughing. Jefferson said, "Rebellion is as necessary in the political world as storms are in the physical." I doubt any Neo-con would say anything like that. John Adams and the entire Senate signed the Treaty of Tripoli which states that the U.S. is NOT a Christian nation (Article 11). I don't think your Republicans would ever dare say anything like that. Sorry to rain on your parade but the majority of the founding fathers were liberal.

actually there is.
democracy was considered an extremely radical and progressive idea for that time.
sorry you don't understand history very well.

maybe if you would read some of thomas paine's works, or even thomas jefferson's, you would understand. Most people like you, will denounce many of their comments as socialism if not told who stated them, just like you do with the liberals today.

You think any conservative is going to throw tea off a boat into a river to PROTEST British rule? not hardly sweetheart, that is DISSENT! you know, what you people consider the hallmark of terrorist sympathizers.
One other point.... The only thing that even remotely makes them remotely similar to conservatives, is the fact that they had religious beliefs which were not uncommon during those days; however, they didn't feel the need to force their faiths on everyone else, which sets them very far apart from right-wing idealists.

The right-wing and the neo-cons do the same thing, much to my frustration.

The idea is that the left carries with it the revolutionary attitudes of the Framers.

lLiberals of today have as much in common with the founding fathers as monkeys do to whales. There is nothing the liberals stand for today that the founding fathers would approve of.
