It is incase of an emergency situation. They can then lock the doors and protect those people within the building. They may never need to use them, but they are there in the event if they did.

Demi a store is classed as open 24/7, and it will be open untill maybe 7to9pm. Then they lock the doors, but open a hatch window so people can purchase what they need, petrol, basic groceries....but it also puts the attendant in safety incase of robberies............................but they still serve 24/7.................

In case of emergency like a hurricane or flood and they have to leave, they lock up. If they do close on days like Christmas, they lock up and if they are robbed, when the police come to investigate, they lock up. That and it's municipal code that every dwelling must have locks on it.
