Get a dog. A good watchdog will keep the herons away.
But don't get a water loving dog like a lab or you'll have more problems with your pond than just fighting off a stupid bird.

LOL you must live somewhere close to my neighborhood because the herons have found our ponds to be the all you can eat fish buffet. For a long time, my poor neighbor who has 4 cats was being blamed for the constantly disappearing pond fish, but it kept happening after she moved. One day, the neighbor set up a camera only to discover that the herons were our culprits. We've all tried different remedies, some put spinning pinwheels around the pond, one used CD's hanging on fishing wire from surrounding trees and bushes, one tried using one of those rock speakers and the stereo tuned in to talk radio. But, only one of us still has her koi because she did use a net. The only problem is that sometimes the heron gets caught in it and she has to extricate it.

sorry about the fish. I also have a koi pond but never had the heron problem. When i researshed the problem everyone says to have one of the fake alligaters and a place in the bottom of the pond for the koi to hide. There is suppose to be a ceramic tree with the center hollowed out. They make them for indoor aquriums but i have never found one for a bigger setup.
