So many wasted minds...just as bad are the ones rusted shut.

I firmly agree that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. I am a senior citizen now and I often forget things as if they go in one ear and, literally, out the other.

I do things to help my memory stay as strong as possible, i.e. YA (yesss!) with much research if needed (but then I forget where I should find the question at times LOL!), Merriam Webster crossword puzzles, thinking seriously before putting words to paper (well, keyboard LOL!), editing everything (internally) in sight, and discussing all sorts of things with my spongebrain DH ( he really does soak up information like a sponge *and*retains it).

I do not mean to be pejorative when I speak about the public schools of today. DH teaches French 1,2,3,4 in a public HS in which the *almighty* (j/k) Test Scores went up 107 points in one year--and it is not in a wealthy district. The strong principal and parents accredit this to the good teachers, who plan well, have good discipline and care about their students. Having gone up so much in a year gave great motivation to the students.

Despite the good things, he has run into some very bright kids whose brains are totally locked and unable to draw new things in. However, they do have cell phones, all the new technical gear (I don't even know what these gadgets are!) and frequently skip class. One very intelligent girl had missed 12 days of his class (not absent, just not in her classes) and had not attempted to make up her work. The mother-- a teacher 8 ( --tried to blast him to the moon. "My daughter was *not* absent for 12 days!", she emailed last Thanksgiving. *I* am a teacher, for God's sake!" He emailed back and fully explained what had occurred. She emailed back, yelling (IN ALL CAPS) and said *she* was right; *she* was a teacher!

DH did not care to play email with a totally off the wall mother-teacher, so he did not reply. Guess who walked in, head down and looking sheepish, the Monday after the holiday. You got it!

Then there are the ones, as you mentioned, with brains "rusted shut". One guy will be taking Spanish 1 for the third time this fall--and he is fluent in Spanish! (DH is happy because this year he has no Spanish classes for the first time, just 5 French.)

Oh, then there is the girl who, in the middle of class, reached into her backpack and pulled out------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
an ear of corn, which she totally chomped on until it was gone! "But maestro, corn is not forbidden in the School Regs!" (She was referred to the counselor after class.)

I am sorry to be so long-winded, but you touched a very sensitive spot! I, too, have been a teacher for 20+ years, only stopping because my health went south.
