I'm just curious... do you think the 'sitcoms' on tv these days reflect real life or does real life often model itself after tv shows?

That depends...Reality TV and TV documentaries can mimic life (if they are not set up). On the other hand, shows like My Sweet Sixteen, MTV, E Entertainment are not real. However, we try to mimic them like they are. You see it in how girls dress, how men interact with women and the unrealistic, materialistic expectations of our society.

Too many people imitate TV that's why politicians want to go on shows like The Tonight Show to make a few laughs at our expense and for what? You guessed it: to appear to the TV imitators.

Neither.
Your statements are not true positive and negative, but rather two separate propositions: 1) do you think TV imitates life? (No, TV lampoons, idealizes or simplifies life in order to TELL A STORY); and
2) Does life imitate TV? (No, life response to reality, and TV is a STORY).
See, even the so-called "reality" shows are not terribly real. The presence of cameras and crews changes things immensely. And while some people may feel inspired by television programs, they are limited in the degree to which they can emulate the programs by the realities of life: finances, physics and timing.
TV can be enjoyable as a diversion, but it neither is life nor influences life to any measurable degree.

I don't know about Sitcoms, but judging by the divorce rate in the UK, Soap Operas (namely Eastenders) certainly appear to have had an influence. Eastenders, for our peeps across the pond, is an incredibly miserable, leaden and grey story of 'yer East End folk', it's a place where women divorce their husbands because he never noticed she had a new hair style. It's a show that has a double omnibus airing on Christmas Day!!! I'm in danger of a rant so .....

that's a great question. probably we are trying to imitate the people on TV. although in real life parents never make out in front on of their children like they do on sitcoms. parents really don't make out.

Often enough lately alot of the sitcoms reflect me and my roomie and our friends. Its funny, so I think because we're all naturally crazy that TV reflects our life.

I think TV shows take real life occurances and make them into episodes. If life was boring - there would be nothing on TV.
