You've obviously never been there. It's damn scary watching the one he loves most go through so much pain: especially when the cause of that pain he is equally the cause of.
I was surprised that my husband actually stayed the whole time during my labor even though I could see the terror on his face.
My best friend (a woman) had to leave because she was overcome with emotion.
If a man leaves during labor, he isn't uncaring. He's scared and/or feeling guilty.

It's only been in the past 20-30 years they've been allowed in. My Dad wasn't allowed in at any of our births in the 60s.
Think about it, they have to witness the woman they love in extreme pain and they can't do anything about it but whisper platitudes which usually go on deaf ears.
There's a lot of mess, it's not a pretty thing. My niece apparently adores the socks off me but if she was having a baby and wanted me to witness it .... ahh no, I would shove her mother, dad, sister and brothers in before I would go and even then I would look around for a stand-in.
Not something I want to see.

There is really no need for him to be there not until the baby is due to be born...i was in labour for 18 hours and falling in and out of sleep all the time..there was nothing he could do apart from sit there and look at me.... i felt sorry for him having nothing to do...it would have been better if he could have gone home and came back when the baby was due to be born but of course it doesnt work like that....some men are just not sentimental that way i suppose!!

I think because they think it's going to be worse than it is, like as in messy. But, it actually isn't. I think they're afraid they might pass out or show a sign of weakness. It's beautiful & there's nothing like seeing your baby rite after it's entered this world. I was w/both my granddaughters when they were born, & it was a feeling you can't relay to anyone unless you've been there.

Men usually don't like to see a woman in pain. So therefore they will faint or leave at the sight of it. Men are sometimes babies, we women have to help 'em out!
And they probably don't enjoy watching all of that and probably think it is gross.

It's hard for most women to understand, but watching her in so much pain and being helpless to ease it is hard to accept. Some guys are weaker than others and just can't take it.

I didn't know some men just walked out while their women are giving birth!
My boyfriend better not do that to me or else ( shaking fist, angrily )!

If a man isn't with the woman while she's in labor, it's because he's got doubts of being the father, or they're not married.
