A college and a university are basically the same thing. They're both institutions of continuing education past the high school years. The difference is all universities offer 4-year undergraduate programs (bachelors degree programs) and are state funded, but not all colleges are state-funded and many only offer 2-year undergraduate programs (associates degree programs).

If you want to be a doctor, you need to go to medical school at either a college or a university for 4 years, then you have to do your internship, and after that you'll be a doctor. You may require additional schooling or training to be a pediatrician.

In general, a college offers a curriculum(bunch of classes)
in a specific field of study. The college only gives out degrees in a specialized field such as teaching or
nursing.

A university offers degrees in several fields of study. For
example, Ball State University was at one time Ball State
Teachers College. When it was a college, all students
there were education majors. Now that it is a university,
it offers degrees in social work, architecture, nursing,
psychology, and several other fields of study.

Actually, a university is made up of two or more "colleges"
on the same campus. You don't have to go to one or the other first. However, if you were at a university and wanted
to change majors, you might be able to remain there and
make the change. If you were at a college and wanted to
change your major(field of study) you would have to go to a different school .
