If they are defending their own country from 'our' side, they are terrorists. It's really very simple.
If we use the same tactics against them, we're freedom fighters.
You see? Wasn't hard to figure out...

I would say a Freedom Fighter is fighting against a recognized government/system and has clear, bona fida issues whereas a terrorist, judging by the lot we have around at the moment, have no clear political aims and just like blowing up things!

When someone fights an invading military force directly, they could be called freedom fighters.
When someone bombs schools, shopping centers, churches, and kidnaps and beheads innocent people, they're terrorists.
