Hi,

First of all, some women do suffer from hair loss. It's far less common, but it does happen.

For men, the main factor is heredity. According to WebMD, those with male pattern baldness tend to inherit "hair follicles with a genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair follicles sensitive to DHT begin to miniaturize, shortening the lifespan of each hair follicle affected." After a while, these follicles will stop producing "cosmetically acceptable hair."

The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that female pattern baldness is "associated with genetic predisposition, aging, and levels of endocrine hormones (particularly androgens, the male sex hormones)."

Baldness for both men and women is due primarily to heredity. "Just as in men, the hormone DHT appears to be at least partially to blame for the miniaturization of hair follicles in women suffering with female pattern baldness."

So, the reasons for male and female baldness are similar, but the rate of occurrence is much lower for women.

Mike

A few women DO get bald. There's even a phrase male-pattern baldness. Just not as many balding women as men. Maybe it's something to do with testosterone?

Women can get very thin hair, but rarely get completely bald. Certain areas of the scalp become bald due to a genetic condition called male pattern baldness. Some men get receeding hairlines, others start with baldness at the crown akin to Friar Tuck's tonsure. The skin on the bald parts of the scalp is sensitive to androgens. The skin on the hair bearing areas are insensitive (or less sensitive) to androgen. That is why a tiny patch of skin bearing a few hair follicles from the back part of the scalp can be successfully transplanted to a bald area.

This has to do with it being a recessive trait on the X chromosome. The guy only needs it on the X since the Y does not cancel it out. On the other hand, women need it on both Xs because it's recessive.

So guys have twice as much chance to be bald than women. Also, for guys, look at your mom's dad. If he's bald, you're pretty likely to be.
