The Cards were 9.5 game out of the playoffs in 2001 at about this same date and were sellers - trading Jason Christiansen. They then made the playoffs.

Despite being a huge Cards fan, I just don't think this team is as good - especially if Carpenter's return is being set back. However, despite recent good play I also do not think either the Cubs or Brewers are invincible.

So what you should do? ANd if you say sell, who do you look to trade and why?

Chris Duncan ain't going anywhere. He is too young, not yet eligible for free agency or arbitration and too good to give up unless they get a stud prospect in return for him.

I don't think they are going to make too terribly many moves simply because of all of the injuries and the guys that have in the minors that are major league ready are already up like Ludwick, Ryan, and Shumacker. I could possibly see them moving someone like Encarnacion to make room for Ankiel who is tearing up the minors this year.

I have seen Rolen's name being floated out there but all indications are he is staying put.

I don't know that the Cards really have anything that other teams are dying to get their hands on that they would be willing to move.

I don't know that the Cards are going to do much if anything at all simply because they don't have any real prospects to deal and don't have anyone they are dying to move up to the bigs right now.

After last year they probably believe they can come back from any deficit and catch the Brewers and Cubs. They will try to pick up a player or two if they get close but on the other side of the coin I don't see them as big sellers if things don't go their way. They have a good core group of players and might be just a pitcher or two away, Remember, they have been without Carpenter all year long as well.

The names that i have seen thrown around indicate possibilites of the Cards trading Juan, Eckstein, Izzy, or Rolen. They are looking for a outfielder with a power bat (Griffey Jr or Dunn?) and a starting pitcher (D. Willis and Daniel Cabrera are on the trading block).

I personally would like to see Eckstein, Rolen and Izzy stay in STL, but i can live with Juan leaving. Would really like the thought of Griffey Jr in RF.
