I have recently noticed that one of my female guppies has developed a sack-like thing on her underside. At first I thought she was giving birth but she's definitely not! What is it? I have uploaded a photo of her to my site http://www. freewebs. com/tomstaples/can.jpg (i have had to put spaces in because yahoo wont let me type it out fully) so you can have a look if it helps...

Many thanks,

Tom

That's nice color in the tail for a female. Unfortunately, the object is a little out of focus, so it's hard to see exactly what it is. My first thought is that it may be a tumor or an infection by a parasitic worm (see photos: http://www.fishpalace.org/unknownworms1_anonymous.jpg , http://www.fishpalace.org/unknownworms1_mikeaofa.jpg ) If the last is the case, you may be able to see small white worms within or around the mass. This can be treated using Clout (antiparasitic medication). Unfortunately, there's no treatment for a tumor. If your fish is behaving normally, this is something it may live with her entire life. If it's causing her problems, you may need to humanely put her out of her misery. The best way to do with is with clove oil (an anesthetic which can be overdosed to cause death), which you can find in health food stores or drug stores. Here's the proper method for using clove oil: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm There's also another product that you may be able to find in a pet store:

My betta had the exact same thing. The bulge was HUGE but she wasnt pregnant because there were no other fish in the tank with her. I looked it up online, and sources told me it could be bloating, so I fasted her for one day. [it told me to] and it didnt look better. So instead of the usual 4 pellets of food, I only gave it one for the next couple days. By a week, it was cured! Hope this helps!
