I have seen this in bars and at pools, so I tried it and it works.
Is it the flies vision or what is it that makes it work?

Anatomically speaking, flies have great eyesight. They are also very spooking and will avoid movement. Try to sneak up on a fly and you will see what I mean.

The bags cause a shift in light, causing shadows and what the flies percieve as movement. They will avoid this.

It will not work on mosquitos, gnats, etc as their eyesight is poor.

The penny is unneeded. The water will move with the slightest breeze. Flies do not like movement.

THe water reflection messes with the way the fly sees. It thinks its about to fly into water, so it goes the other way. THere is some speculation that this works, and that teh above reason is why. I have heard success and ihave heard failure. I havent tried it, i have screens .

To a fly the bag resembles a hornets' nest. Hornets eat a lot of flys. Flys know this ,and don't want to be a meal. I had a hornets' nest on my back porch year before last, and not one fly did I have on it.
