I live in the USA and I am genuinely interested in finding out more about how people who are in the middle of dealing with the EU feel about it. Also, is the UK part of the EU?

Geezer, most Americans do not HAVE a clue about how Europe feels in the first place. Sorry, but because the dollar is at an all time low, and the fact that all the money is going to the gas companies here, I don't have time or money to go across the ocean to Europe...HENCE WHY I AM USING THE INTERNET TO FIND OUT INFORMATION!

In 2007, our net payments to the EU will reach £6 billion. Year on year we give this money and over the years we see our influence as a nation diminish whilst the cost of membership increases. The EU is undemocratic, corrupt, wasteful, extremely expensive, outdated, bureaucratic, unnecessarily interfering and thoroughly damaging to our way of life, our laws, our human rights, our economy, our industry and commerce. Britain's heritage is slowly being chipped away by the faceless European Bureaucrats making the decisions and over-riding our Legal Systems. Britain is better off out.

Once the dreaded "Treaty/Constitution" is signed and ratified,it automatically opens the door to the EURO!!!!!!!!
Another reason to fight for a referendum!

I cannot speak for the whole of UK but I feel that many of the ills and stupidity of the present government can be traced to the EU or the EU is the excuse. So far as I am concerned an association of countries which have a long history of at least disaike for one another wil not suceed without military intervention The history of France and England anyway is full of at best misunderstandings which continue to this day. We had two very bloody wars ( I do not think US has forgotten them either ) with Germany in the 20th century and the resulting hatred is evident to-day when we meet, I think there is also a grudging respect there which hopefully will turn into trust in the future.

My own feeling are that I was bamboozled into voting to join the then EEC by a labour government. I had not realised atthat time that these politicians do not care who governs UK so long as they can draw there expenses.

The Murdoch media are strongly opposed to the EU, of which the UK is a member, and so are most of their consumers.
They keep repeating lies and half truths that they are fed by said media (Murdoch owns Fox in the US) and think they should keep their antiquated measuring systems. Their own political system is as clean or corrupt and ridden with nepotism as Europe, but whatever is wrong is being put down to the malevolent influence of the Brussels bureaucracy.

The Germans have paid much more into Europe over the decades, but hardly anybody there complains about it. They and most other Continentals think that peace in Europe for more than 60 years now is well worth it.

They are NOT in the middle of dealing with Europe, they have always kept to the fringes, and then complained about decisions going against them, like the Central Bank going to Frankfurt instead of London, when they didn't even join the common currency.

I'm Irish, a next-door neighbour, you could say, and we, like most other Europeans, just shrug our shoulders and leave them to their eternal complaining. It doesn't even mean that a majority is against Europe, only that the ones who keep moaning are much more visible and audible, while those who are quite happy are not.

We can be in the EU, but we must never be controlled by the EU.
Not joining the Euro` was economically good sense, the £ is very strong in the world, whereas if the UK had joined the Euro it would have been a disaster.

My friends and I are average British people, the E.U. does come into conversation occasionally. We are against it because of the following reasons
1, it is a corrupt organisation
2, they will not open their accounts for audit
3, E.U. provides jobs for failed politicians
4,British permanent jobs are filled through "croneyism"
5, Britain fulfils her military role, other member
countries do not.
6, We pay up any levies immediately, unlike other countries
7, Europe, particularly the French dump their unwanted illegal immigrants on us
I ,my friends and a lot of other British people think that we should have a referendum to state if we are for or against E.U. membership, this will never come about though,we have too many corrupt, self seeking politicians looking to feather their own nests ,Great Britain is NOT part of europe we are as said Great Britain, no one has heard of Great France, Great Germany and so on , we are a proud and unique country

I hope that this gives you some insight into what some British people think !

Yes the UK is part of the EU.
This non-democratic federation began life as the "Common Market" a free trade area and when a referendum was held in the UK that is all that it ever was or ever suggested.
As we all know this grew and developed into the headless beast of today with no democratically elected president, budgetary returns that have not been signed off since its inception and God knows what else!
Now our laws are dictated by Brussels, Every Tom, dick and Harry can enter our country and our elected representatives do nothing about it.
I would get out tomorrow but I'm not elected -Yet!

I have never met anybody who will say that they voted to join, and most people that I know would like to get out of it. There are people not elected by us telling us how to live, work, and many other things. It was published the other day about the billions disappearing in fraud every week. It is costing honest people a fortune.

If the UK government had any balls
they would hold a referendum ask the voters,

Abolish it now...or get us the hell out.

A refereddum on the treaty...oops sorry it`s the constitution in another form...(usual dishonest underhand eu thinking).

Reading the responses...i suggest....ignore and eu regulation...or do the opposite.

When you get eu election direct mailing...put a sticky label over address, write `return to sender` and put in back in the post.
